President's Perspective
Oliver Bonham, P.Geo. Steps Down and Moves On

Scott McLean, P.Geo. - APGO President

It is with some regret that we bid farewell to Oliver (“Ollie”) Bonham who has admirably watched over the Association as its Executive Director and Registrar since September of 2002. Oliver’s contribution to the Association has been outstanding and I am confident that his high level of enthusiasm, organizational skill and leadership will be of enormous benefit to all Canadian Professional Geoscientists as he assumes his new role as the first CEO and Executive Director of the Canadian Council of Professional Geoscientists (CCPG).

Professionalism: Expertise Alone Is Not Enough!

By Norman S.W. Williams, Ph.D., P.Eng.
Executive Director/Registrar

What or who is a professional? If your answer is: “Someone who is the member of a profession.” It, then, begs the question: “What’s a profession?” In colloquial language the word profession is used loosely to mean an occupation or a job, and, therefore, a professional is regarded simply as someone who earns a living through the performance of an activity. For example, we speak of professional athletes as opposed to amateurs with the understanding that the latter do not usually receive an income from their sport. During the late 1960s, debates in the Ontario legislature concerning the concept of self-regulation defined a profession as "a self-selected, self-disciplined group of individuals who hold themselves out to the public as possessing a special skill derived from training and education and are prepared to exercise that skill in the interest of others."1

The Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada Advocates Mobile Practice of Geoscientists - Deadline For You to Complete Their Survey is March 31!

By Richard Moore, PDAC Director
Chair of the PDAC's Geosciences Committee

The mobility survey is a Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) response to the unwillingness of provincial self-regulating bodies to adequately facilitate the mobile practice of geoscience. The APGO mobility committee strongly encourages members to complete the PDAC’s mobility survey in order to help demonstrate that Canadian geoscientists need a much more fluid system of professional self regulation. The current provincially based system is clearly out-of-step with the mobile character of geoscience practice in Canada. The following article from the PDAC describes the Institute on Governance mobility survey and provides a link to the survey.

Take The Professional Ethics Challenge for March! Ethics Case No. 3 - The Professional Nightmare -Making a Mistake

Anonymous Author

Background/Preamble
Sometimes professionals make a mistake. Hopefully, the following case is somewhat useful by helping you think of yourself in this position, how easily it can happen to you, how can mistakes be found before publication and what ways would be ethical to solve the problem. Although the case is geared towards environmental consulting, we hope those from other sectors of geoscience will also extract some value from the following case. We appreciate any feedback or comments - anonymous or not.
