A researcher stands along the edge of one of the large fractures running through the lake basin following the 2007 drainage. Image courtesy of Sarah Das, WHOI Scientists studying glaciers in Greenland have found that lakes of water on the surface of a glacier can quickly and completely cut all the way through to the base of the ice. "If there is a crack or defect in the surface that is large enough, and a sufficient reservoir of water to keep that crack filled, it can create a conduit all the way down to the bed of the ice sheet," said Sarah Das, one of the scientists on the project.

President’s Perspective: Introducing Your New President and The Year Ahead

By Greg Finn, Ph.D., P.Geo.
APGO President

As I write my first article for Field Notes, the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario (APGO) has just held its 6th Annual General Meeting. The event was very well attended and the APGO thanks all those members and guests who came. Before I introduce myself to members, I want to recognize the contributions that Steve Usher, P.Geo., P.Eng., has made to the Association over the past year as president in addition to the 7 years on Council. Steve is the last of the original Councillors still serving. He has one more year to serve in the role of Past President and I look forward to continuing to work with him on Council and Executive in the coming year.

As I start my term as the APGO President, I thought I would tell you about my background, how I became involved in the APGO and what I would like to accomplish in the next 12 months as President. Currently, I hold the position of Associate Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at Brock University, where I have been a faculty member since 1985. At Brock I have served as Department Chair, Associate Dean of Mathematics and Science and I currently hold the position of Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President, Academic.

Executive Director’s Report Delivered at the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario 6th Annual General Meeting

By Andrea Waldie, P. Geo.
APGO Executive Director & Registrar

I would like to thank all of those who attended the Annual General Meeting on June 5, 2008 and for proving what I deeply believe; that the APGO is an active, vital and proud professional association. I would also like to thank those who took the time to submit their proxy votes. With the support of the Association members, through such actions as returning proxy forms, business at the Association can move steadily forward. Thank you for your attention to APGO business matters.

Most of what I will discuss in this article may be found in the Annual Report which is available on the website.

Registration numbers for the year ending Dec. 31, 2007 may be found in the Annual Report. Current registration numbers, as of May 31, 2008, are: 1,389 practising members; 12 temporary members; 10 limited members; 12 non-practising members; 60 geoscientists in training; and 24 student members. Although these numbers are substantial, we all know they could be much better. The vast majority of us know someone who should be registered and isn’t. It is time that all of us, who are practising geoscience in Ontario, are registered as Professional Geoscientists here in Ontario.

Ontario’s Private Well Owner Survey Results

By Mary Jane Conboy, Ph.D., P.Geo.

Well Wise Resource Centre recently surveyed well technicians, professionals that work with well owners, and well owners. The Well Wise Resource Centre consulted with LURA survey consultants to conduct a Needs Assessment to learn more about Ontario well owners - what are their common problems with wells, where do they go for information, what topics they are most interested in learning more about and barriers that exist that prevent well owners from taking action to manage their well proactively. Several potential solutions were also assessed. This study was funded by the Ministry of Environment Drinking Water programs branch. The Well Wise Resource Centre is a new non-profit organization that conducts research relevant to private well owners and who also offer technical support and tools to help well owners and professionals working with well owners." Well owners were also engaged by using postcard surveys at events such as the International Ploughing Match and the Cottage Life show as well as through six focus group sessions.

2007 CPD Declaration Form Deadline is June 30, 2008

Please note that the deadline for the mandatory submission of the 2007 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Program Declaration Form is midnight, June 30, 2008.

As set out in Section 28 of the Professional Geoscientists Act, 2000, one of the objects of the Association is “To establish, maintain and develop standards of knowledge and skill among its members and certificate holders.” To that end and to assist members by providing structure and support for professionals to engage in a program of lifelong learning, APGO established the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program. The Continuing Professional Development program demonstrates that APGO-licensed professional geoscientists, including the holder(s) of an APGO-issued Certificate of Authorization, are committed to maintaining and exhibiting the requisite competence to ensure that the public welfare and the natural environment are safeguarded where the practice of professional geoscience is concerned. Those members who become registered after December 1, 2007 are exempt from filing for the 2007 year. Those members who became licensed after September 1, 2007 but before November 30, 2007, or work less than 4 months per year, qualify to file 40 CPD hours for the 2007 year. For those who qualify for the exemption or reduced CPD hours indicated above, please indicate your exemption or the number of reduced hours requested, along with the reason for the exemption or reduced hours, in the CPD Exemption Request box on the summary page of your submission. The change in CPD hour reporting requirements, as indicated above, will be reflected in an upcoming revised CPD Guideline document.

APGO members are required to submit a completed and signed summary Declaration Form of CPD-eligible activities to ensure compliance by June 30, 2008. APGO thanks you for your attention to this matter. Please go to http://www.apgo.net/cpd/cpd.html for additional information on the program, as well as the Declaration Form.
