Display Samples Needed - APGO Office

Oliver Bonham, P.Geo.

In order to showcase geoscience and illustrate to the public what it is that many professional geoscientists work with every day, APGO is planning to install a glass fronted showcase in the entrance area of its Toronto office.

For this, we require mineral samples, and rock and ore samples representing not just Ontario geoscience, but the many parts of the world in which APGO geoscientists undertake their work. We also want to showcase all disciplines of geoscience in which our members practice

This is an appeal to all APGO members to submit material for display in your office.

What kind of samples?
  • Mineral specimens
  • Ore samples
  • Character rock samples of classic Ontario lithologies - dimension stone/aggregate/ground water aquifers, etc
  • Ontario hydrocarbon pay zone material or recovered crude oil
  • Geological phenomena (mud cracks, poly-phase folding, tension gashes, etc.)
  • Fossils
  • Contaminated soil/rock
  • Others
Size and format?

Samples should be fist size or bigger, so they can be viewed without handling. If possible, they should be chipped or sawn to leave a good steady base. Where possible, ore and lithology specimens should be cut and polished. Loose or friable material should be sent in a clear glass jar or vial.

Labelling?

All samples should either be fully labelled in a permanent way on the base or clearly numbered with reference to a numbered label accompanying the sample.

Sample labelling information?

Please include:
  • Geographic location, including mine, quarry operation, oil play, etc.
  • Sample description, including geological setting, age, etc.
  • Name of submitter
Samples should be carefully packed and shipped to the APGO office, 67 Yonge Street, Suite 1500, Toronto, Ontario M5E 1J8

All samples submitted will become the property of APGO. Submitters of samples selected for display will be acknowledged and will each receive a small prize.

Help showcase our profession! Help bring Geoscience to the city!
