Your Field Notes
Editor: An Introduction
Wendy Diaz, P.Geo.
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the second edition of Field Notes.
Oliver Bonham asked me in September if I would be interested in taking
on the role of editor and I welcomed the chance to keep in touch with
the APGO in this capacity as editor. Let me take this opportunity
to tell you a little bit about myself. I am from Burlington, Ontario
and I am a hydrogeologist currently living in Durham, North Carolina.
My interests in and knowledge of the environment and professional
geoscience stem from my education and work experience in Canada. I
received a B.Sc. in Geology from Queen's University in Kingston and
a Master's of Earth Sciences from Memorial University in Newfoundland.
I worked as an exploration geologist for mining companies in Ontario,
Northern Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta, throughout the 1980's.
I also worked a couple of summers for the Ontario Geological Survey.
After obtaining my Masters, I joined Golder Associates Ltd. in their
Calgary office and worked for them in their environmental division
for almost 10 years in their Houston, Hamilton and Mississauga offices.
Since 1999, I have been raising my three children and volunteering in the community by running the neighborhood swim team and participating in land use rezoning protests against redevelopment of environmentally sensitive areas in rural Durham County. I am married to Floyd Diaz, also a Queen's geology graduate, who works for Digital Recorders in Durham. In my spare time I enjoy our neighborhood book club, gardening, golf, photography and playing soccer.
I would like to extend a huge thank you to our first editor, Fiona Childe, P. Geo. and APGO member based in British Colombia, for her great job in making Field Notes a reality. Members should know it was Fiona's effort that got the newsletter underway. All the hard work in putting together the October inaugural issue, including setting the groundwork around editorial policy and creating the first look of Field Notes was accomplished by Fiona. We wish her all the best in her future endeavors.
This newsletter is the voice of our membership and our window to the
public, as such I would like to take this opportunity to encourage
you to submit your ideas and comments in the form of Letters to the
Editor as well as suggestions for stories you would like to see published.
If you are interested in writing an article for publication please
contact Oliver Bonham or myself.
