President's Perspective

John Buckle, P.Geo. - APGO President

In Coming to the end of my term, I reflect on the past year as your President.

Firstly, some important information to pass on. For those of you in the field or away from your regular mail, a reminder the APGO is holding its Second Annual General Meeting on Thursday, June 2, 2005 at The Toronto Board of Trade, Room A-D, First Canadian Place Click here for further details. Also a print version of the Annual Report has now been circulated to all members, to view the 2004 Annual Report in Color, please click here.

To continue the APGO is becoming a leading geoscience association in Canada. The concept of Professional Geoscience is becoming well accepted both within the geoscience community and well recognized by the public of Ontario, as well as the many corners of the world where our members practice.

Credit for the success of our association is due to the efforts of the volunteers and staff of the APGO. It should be noted that it is not just the dedicated individuals who generously give of their time and talent but also the companies who support them. Without the in-kind contributions of many of Ontario’s leading geoscience firms, your Association would not have accomplished these benchmarks.

APGO has received 1400 applications since it began taking applications only three years ago. This illustrates the acceptance, by Geoscientists in Ontario, of the rights and obligations of self-governance of their profession under the Professional Geoscientists Act, 2000. Legislated professional self-regulation is a privilege and responsibility that geoscientists in Ontario willingly accept.

APGO members are recognized as Qualified Persons under the definitions put forth in National Instruments 43-101 and 51-101 – federal directives for public disclosure of geosciencific information; and the designation P.Geo. is becoming one of the only accepted credentials for official sign off on matters of a geoscientific nature. (The only exception being a P.Eng. who is suitably qualified and experienced to practice in the field of geoscience.)

This is an acknowledgment of our Association's mandate for protection of the public. The Association is now on a solid footing and looking forward to a bright future as a world leader professional geoscience association.
