Discipline Case involving a P.Eng. in Ontario


In Ontario, APGO licenses Ontario’s 1,147 professional geoscientists and provides permits to corporations providing geological services to the public under Certificates of Authorization. Under the (Professional Geoscientists Act, 2000) a valid Certificate of Authorization is required in order for any individual or business to provide professional geological services to the public. Only appropriately qualified and experienced geoscientists, committed to the Code of Ethics that puts the public interest first, are entitled to practice in Ontario.

Geoscience is no different from the other self-regulating professions. The following is a link to a discipline case involving an individual practicing as an engineer in Ontario without a license.

Ontario man fined for illegally providing professional engineering services:

Toronto, ON -- Tony Blackett, a resident of the town of Odessa, Ont., was fined $6,250, including a victim impact surcharge, on May 19, 2004, for providing professional engineering services without being licensed. Blackett is not, nor has he ever been, licensed by Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).

In Ontario, under the Professional Engineers Act, a public protection statute, only those persons and companies who are licensed by PEO may offer or provide professional engineering services to the public.

Professional Engineers Ontario administers the Professional Engineers Act by licensing professional engineers and setting standards for and regulating engineering in Ontario so that the public interest is served and protected. PEO disciplines professional engineers and firms that fail to maintain the profession's technical and ethical standards, and prosecutes in the courts those practising professional engineering without a licence, or using a term, title or designation that may lead others to believe they are entitled to practise.

PEO licenses Ontario's 65,000 professional engineers and permits 3,900 firms and individuals to offer engineering services to the public under Certificates of Authorization. Under the Professional Engineers Act, a valid Certificate of Authorization is required in order for any individual or business to provide professional engineering services to the public. Rigorously educated, experienced, and committed to a Code of Ethics that puts the public interest first, licensed professional engineers are entitled to use the term P.Eng. after their names.
