Meet Your Councillor
Kristin Hanson, P.Geo.
Toronto hydrogeologist offers leadership in promoting membership in the APGO and responds to members concerns
By Crystal Spekking, APGO's Northern Ontario Communications Officer
Kristin has always had a major interest in the field of science. As a high school student, she got really excited about science while working with a great botany/zoology teacher on a science fair project. When she got to university, Kristin had a difficult time deciding on which science field to major in, so she tried almost all of them. In Geology at the time, the big employers were the petroleum exploration companies. She wasn’t really interested in that aspect, but was introduced to a “New” field called Environmental Geology, which she thought was an interesting combination of many fields of science. Kristin was the only Environmental Geology undergraduate major at the time at Ohio University.
Kristin currently manages the Toronto office of Aqua Terre Solutions Inc., an environmental consulting company. Managing the office requires her to manage projects, staff, and clients as well as managing financial and operational aspects of the group. Kristin has a B.Sc. in Environmental Geology, and a M.Sc. in Hydrogeology. Her primary technical focus is on contaminated site assessment and remediation projects.
What are Kristin’s views on professional registration and its effects on the work of the geoscientists?
She thinks it’s a great thing that is long overdue. How else can we manage our profession and encourage professionalism and ethics unless we require practitioners to register and adhere to some minimum standards?
When asked, how has professional registration, made a difference in your life and your workplace? Kristin said,“I think it will bring increased professionalism to the practice of geoscience, and increase our profile with the public. However, we as geoscientists need to embrace this change to make it happen.”
Her message to members
“Being a new councillor, I am happy to see efforts going toward enforcement.” Council also takes input on other issues from members seriously, so please provide your thoughts and concerns to council. “Issues that were raised by members at the annual general meeting were discussed in the council meeting the next day.”
Kristin has heard many members express concern about the cost of annual association fees, especially when compared to fees paid by professional engineers. “There is a minimum cost to establishing and operating a professional association.” Our association operates on a minimal budget, with a lot of volunteer support. Professional engineers outnumber us significantly, so our fees can’t be as low as theirs in the short term.
“Estimates suggest that a significant percentage of the eligible practicing geoscientists in the province are unregistered. All who practice geoscience must be registered; not just the senior geoscientist who signs off on reports. If we each can get one geoscientist to comply with the legislation and register, our membership would double.”
What are APGO's challenges and how can members assist?
“Increase membership by encouraging eligible colleagues to register!”
When asked to name the most exotic place where Kristin’s career has taken her?
Kristin’s answer was the South of France in February, conducting a pump test for a former industrial facility. Her colleagues were quite envious at the time.
When not doing geoscience.
Kristin is a beginner runner, and she just completed her first 15K race this month. She also volunteers with the Ontario Society for Prevention and Cruelty to Animals.
Meet your Councillor profiles will feature one of your APGO Councillors each month in Field Notes. The profiles are based on the answers received to a series of standard questions asked of each Councillor.
