Consider This! - The Privilege of Serving the APGO
Bill Stiebel, P.Geo., Past-President 2004 to 2005
In June 2000, the Ontario Government passed the Professional Geoscientists Act (PGA2000) establishing APGO as a self-regulating organization and recognizing the important role of professional geoscientists in protecting public health and safety and the natural environment. The APGO Transitional Council was appointed by Government in September 2000 to implement the objects of the PGA2000. Now, in 2005 we have a fully elected Council and celebrating 5 years of progress in achieving a world-class professional geoscience association.
This success has been achieved through the tremendous efforts and dedication of volunteers, both geoscientist members and non-member appointees to Council and Committees. The continuing strategic growth of APGO, administration of the Act, and regulation of professional geoscience practice and governance requires members to volunteer their time to work with APGO staff, committees, learn the workings of Council, and stand for nomination and election to APGO Council.
New member volunteers offering to serve on Committees or stand for Council bring fresh and invigorating ideas and debate to issues relevant to APGO’s mandate. Standing as a member, volunteering for a committee or a nominee for Council provides opportunity for you to shape the growth of geoscience practice in Ontario, to demonstrate leadership in public protection and education regarding geoscience applications, and to be recognized by your peers as a leader in the geoscience community.
There are many issues which APGO has to address affecting geoscience practice today: interprovincial mobility; promulgation of new regulations affecting the practice of envirogeoscience; evolution of an Ontario mineral strategy; strategic planning; a growing shortage of geoscientists in Canada, and regulation of practice and enforcement, to name a few. All need dedicated volunteers to continue to make APGO work successfully.
In October 2005, a call for Nominations for 2005-2006 APGO Council will be announced. Only through the volunteer efforts of our members can APGO operate, administer the Act and be successful in protecting the public and meeting members’ expectations for a professional geoscience association.
It is you whom we are looking for, so step forward and serve the public and the
professional geoscience community. It is a privilege bestowed by your peers to serve on an APGO Committee or to be elected to Council. Those members who hear the call and accept the privilege will have the exciting and challenging opportunity to continue to build APGO into the leading professional geoscience association in Canada; a model to which others will aspire.
Blank Nomination Forms for Election to Council are being sent to all members of APGO as part of the annual membership renewal mail out, which you will be receiving in early November. You can also download a blank Council Nomination Form from the APGO website click here. |
