My Experience on Council – Milan Situm, P.Geo., Councillor-Central Region

By Milan Situm, P.Geo.

Upon completion of my first year as councillor, I can honestly say that the cohesion and professionalism on council has probably spoiled me for volunteering for other organizations. There has never been an item on any agenda at council or at committee meetings that was not meaningful. The ultimate focus never seems to sway from its mandate of the regulation of the profession for the protection of the public.

I manage a branch office for a geophysical consulting firm, so when I ran for the position of councillor in Central Ontario, I was not certain what I had to offer, but as it turned out, a small to mid-sized consultancy in geophysics filled a void in the makeup of the council. I believe any new councillor will soon discover that they can provide unique perspectives as well. When you sit around a table with a variety of consulting disciplines, civil servants, academics and other non-geoscientists (representing members of the public) the problem solving skills are tremendous.

To say it has been a learning experience is an understatement. Every meeting has been like a seminar into the inner workings of not just APGO but other organizations that we interact with, such as government and other Self Regulating Organizations inside and outside the province. Without a doubt, the interaction has made me better at what I do as a geophysicist, a consultant and an administrator.
