| Need Some Short-Term Geoscience Help? Consider Career Bridge
By Oliver Bonham, M.Sc. P.Geo.
Executive Director/Registrar
Do you have too much to get done and having trouble finding qualified help? How about getting some support help from a geoscientist who is new to Canada and in need of professional Canadian experience? Give yourself a break and give a geoscientist a break in the process.
Career Edge Career Bridge is a paid private, not-for-profit internship program for new Canadian professionals who are in need of supervised professional work experience. The work experience is necessary for them to meet the qualified work experience requirements for professional registration or for those, who are already registered as a professional, to gain initial local practice experience. Career Edge Career Bridge’s talent pool consists of numerous geoscientists and geological engineers who may already be registered as a GIT (Geoscientist in Training) or EIT (Engineer in Training). All registrants have had their academic qualifications assessed, but are not yet able to practice independently.
How does Career Edge Career Bridge work? Career Edge Career Bridge is much more than a ‘temp’ service. Career Bridge Career Bridge pre-screens and assesses all potential candidates and creates a pool of qualified individuals. It looks after payroll, deductions, insurance etc.; the client pays a modest fee for the services provided by invoice. Career Edge Career Bridge is always accepting new employers, whether they have an immediate, or long-term staffing need.
Since November 2003, over 100 organizations have placed over 290 professional-level newcomers into career-launching positions through Career Edge Career Bridge. Geoscience is a new endeavour for Career Edge Career Bridge. Speaking to Pinoo Bindhani, Manager, of Career Edge Career Bridge, she explained that at present 3% of their database of screened candidates consists of geoscientists. All candidates are seasoned practitioners of their particular discipline in their country of origin and all are keen to get out of a survival job and into the workforce in a meaningful way and to start “plying their trade” again.

NOTE: With respect to licensure, as long a geoscientist engaged through this internship program is under the supervision of a registered P.Geo. and that P.Geo is taking full responsibility for all the work that is undertaken as if it were his or her own work, there is no need for the individual to be registered as a P.Geo. or GIT. [Section 3 (3), 1. of the Professional Geoscientists Act, 2000)
Give Career Edge Career Bridgesome thought; it may give you the help you need. Meet and assess potential new employees for yourself without obligations and also help out a willing new Canadian in the process.
