APGO Gains Some International Exposure In Kuwait
By Norm S.W. Williams, Ph.D., P. Eng., Executive Director & Registrar, APGO
Last spring, Kuwait University's Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences contacted APGO in its search to find a reputable North American geoscience organization to evaluate its undergraduate program for accreditation purposes. Upon learning that that activity is not a part of APGO's mandate, the department expressed an interest in learning about the Association's role and in forging a mutually beneficial professional relationship between the two organizations. To this end, Kuwait University extended an invitation for APGO to visit the department at the same time as a group of professors from the University of Ottawa's Department of Earth Sciences. Thus, representatives of APGO, consisting of volunteers and staff, were the invited guests of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Kuwait University, at the end of last November. Representing APGO were Vice President Steve Usher, P. Geo., Professor Greg Finn, P. Geo., vice chair of the Canadian Geosciences Standards Board (CGSB) of the Canadian Council of Professional Geoscientists and Executive Director & Registrar Norm Williams. They were joined by professors Ian Clark, P. Geo., Tony Fowler and Jan Veizer, faculty members of the University of Ottawa's Department of Earth Sciences. Coordinated by Norm Williams, the visit was funded by Kuwait University.
The Visiting Team met with senior officials of Kuwait University, faculty members, staff and students of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, visited its laboratory facilities, made presentations, and reviewed the department's proposal to modify its undergraduate program. Review of the program focused largely on comparing the proposed subject offerings to the academic knowledge requirements for APGO professional geoscience licensure.
APGO's Executive Director & Registrar began the presentations. He gave a comprehensive overview of APGO's history, its structure and operation, emphasizing its regulatory role and responsibilities, and focusing on the legislative requirements for licensing and registration. Vice President Usher gave a presentation on geoscience consulting in Canada, Professor Finn presented details of the CGSB's current working draft academic standards, and Professor Fowler outlined the University of Ottawa's undergraduate Earth Sciences program.
At the end of the visit, the team agreed to prepare a report on its review of the department's proposed undergraduate program. The report has been completed and it was forwarded to the department by APGO in mid-January. APGO's sought after opinion on geoscientific matters by the Kuwaitis is another indication of the high esteem in which this Association is held by external groups and its growing reputation in the professional geoscience community. APGO continues to strive to be the leader of the geoscience profession for the benefit of society.
