Meet Your Executive Director & Registrar: An Interview with Andrea Waldie

Andrea has had an interest in rocks and minerals since she was 10 years old, when her father used to take her rock hounding in the Bancroft, Ontario area. Andrea fondly remembers attending the Bancroft Gemboree on the August long weekend throughout her teenage years where she traded rock samples and stories with attendees from all over North America.

Andrea excelled in three areas of study during high school: English, History, and Geology. She decided to pursue her interests in geology and attended the University of Waterloo and graduated with an Honours B.Sc. in Earth Science.

Andrea began her consulting business shortly after graduating. She has had the honour to count among her clients several major mining and exploration companies and many junior exploration companies. She also enjoyed having the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) as a client, and managing the International Resource Centre at the PDAC convention for the past eleven years.

What are Andrea's views on professional registration and its effect on the work of geoscientists?

Andrea believes that being a self-regulating profession is an honour. There are few professions with the right to self govern. If the profession is to be taken seriously and is to continue to enjoy this privilege of self-governance, it is the duty of all geoscientists to register.

Andrea believes geoscientists have a profession to be proud of and that with our collective voice great things can be accomplished. It is necessary that all geoscientists be registered and many need to be involved in the association in order to ensure that high standards and public protection are maintained.

Her message to members

Andrea recognizes that there are misconceptions about who needs to register amongst those who are not APGO members. Many believe that registration is only required if one is writing qualifying reports or if wishes to be designated a "Qualified Person". This is not so and by law, anyone who practices geoscience in the course of his or her work needs to be registered.

She believes that APGO will be much stronger if all members work toward clearing up these misconceptions and encourage all those who are not registered to apply. Andrea looks forward to welcoming many new members during her tenure.

What are APGO's challenges and how can members assist?

APGO's challenges are registering all geoscientists and encouraging members to participate in their professional organization. Members should encourage all eligible persons practicing geoscience to register. She welcomes you to drop by the office, or give her a call and consider becoming more involved with the association if you have a spare moment. Your involvement can be as simple as participating in the photo contest to volunteering for a committee (see the APGO web site for a list of committees) or running for council. She welcomes your views and opinions.

When asked to name one of the most memorable places she worked..

She remembered a three and a half month project in the middle of Nunavut. The scenery was beautiful, the crew was great, and the field work was a wonderful experience (with the exception of the black clouds of biting insects that did not seem to recognize that a bug hat was supposed to be a barrier).

When not doing geoscience..

Andrea enjoys spending time with her husband, Craig, and two young children Alexander and Benjamin. Her family enjoys cycling, camping and hiking. Andrea has also enjoyed working at a local food bank for the last two years, but had to leave when she took the position of Executive Director and Registrar for the APGO. She hopes to be able to contribute her time to the bank in new ways in the future.
