President’s Perspective: On Being President and Getting Involved
By Kristin Hanson, M.Sc., P.Geo., APGO President

APGO elections are coming up, with nominations closing in February 2012. My term as your President is flying by, and soon your Vice President, Ian MacDonald, will be stepping into the President role. At this time of year, Council typically discusses open positions on council and what committees need volunteers or chairpersons. Who will be the next leaders of our organization?

Would you get involved? I suggest you consider running for a position on Council. It’s not too difficult or time consuming. Everyone I’ve met on Council has said they get a significant return in terms of personal development and meeting new colleagues for their time. Serving on Council expands one’s horizons, and provides a new perspective on our profession.

Now is the opportune time to give some thought to running for a position. In 2012, two Councilor at Large positions will be open for election. A Councilor at Large represents the membership in general, and can live anywhere in Ontario. I started on Council in an at Large position myself several years ago. The time commitment is quite manageable. Information on standing for election can be found at the following link: http://www.apgo.net/2012Nominations_Call.pdf.

The role of President is one of the roles on Council with the biggest time commitment.

I’m writing to let you know that it’s not too difficult to handle, even for someone like me with a full-time position and a full plate already! Traditionally, the President has a number of management responsibilities, including chairing Council meetings (about 6 per year), chairing Executive Committee teleconferences (about 9 per year), representing our members at Geoscientists Canada (2 meetings per year), being the public face of APGO as needed, liaising with the Executive Director and other staff, and chairing our annual general meeting. Given that the term is only one year, it is certainly a busy year, but it is not out of reach for anyone to handle the role.

Even if you can’t run for a Council position, you can still find a rewarding volunteer position on any one of a number of committees. For a list of committees that might interest you click on the following link http://www.apgo.net/committees.htm. No matter how much time you have to give, or what stage you are in your career, we could use your input to help to grow our profession. Consider volunteering. You can find out more about volunteering by visiting the APGO website:
http://apgo.net/members-volunteer.htm

My term as President is half over already, and it’s been a very rewarding challenge. I would certainly do it again, and encourage others to consider getting involved. It will add value to your life and return to you far more than you invest.

1. As professional geoscientists and consultants, we need to be knowledgeable and familiar with various environmental legislation. The following conviction is a sobering reminder that we are responsible and liable for our actions. If we conduct, supervise or even hire subcontractors who carry out activities that are in breach of legislation, we as well as our clients are at risk of prosecution.

2. CGENers: The Virtual Museum of the Burgess Shale, an online exhibition that looks at all aspects of one of the most famous paleontological sites in the world, the Burgess Shale in BC's Yoho National Park.

s3. The 4th annual Ontario Mining Association So You Think You Know Mining video contest also kicks off today. The contest invites Ontario high school students to create and submit videos that profile the benefits of mining. Prizes totalling $33,500 are available to the winning entries.

Are You Covered? Professional Liability Insurance and Secondary Professional Liability Insurance-You need them both!
By Bill Stiebel, M.Sc., P.Geo

Past President APGO, President Canadian Federation of Earth Sciences. Senior Principal Stantec Consultants Ltd., Mississauga, Ontario.

It had been a very long day. It began with a call to reception at lunch, a person stood in front of me asked me my name, handed me an envelope, and then told me “you’re served”. When I got back to my office and sat down and while reading the contents, it dawned on me that this was a notice of a claim for damages! The Claim stated work we had carried out as hydrogeological consultants for a client at an industrial property, had resulted in a number of private water wells going dry, other wells becoming contaminated and further made all types of allegations respecting errors in the work and technical incompetence by me and company staff that had made the local groundwater supply nonpotable and was likely to render nearby surface water contaminated. The Claim was for over $4,000,000 in damages with all legal costs extra to be included. I had 30 days to respond. I nearly fell off my chair!

Our company only had 10 staff including me, the owner. While getting our APGO licences years before and our company registration we had become aware of the mandatory requirements to provide proof of Professional Liability Insurance (PLI) in the minimum amount required by the Gesocience Act 2000 (as amended) to ensure public protection for damages caused by a professional geoscientist’s work. When we worked on our own, before starting the company three years ago, we had made the allowed Mandatory Declaration that as sole practitioners we did not carry PLI (or any other insurance for that matter) and relied on being covered by the owner where required. Of course, I never realized at the time what could happen if a claim occurred and I had no insurance coverage. Then after starting the company, I spoke to an insurance broker to find out where to get PLI insurance at a reasonable rate and also because when trying to lease an office, Commercial General Liability Insurance (CGL) had to be obtained by our company – in case someone slipped or tripped coming into the office (the building owner was worried about being sued and liable)
