Managing Finances in a Difficult Marketplace

Description: The Managing Finances in a Difficult Marketplace Workshop will provide tools and strategies for Owners and Financial Managers of small- and medium-size manufacturing and service businesses. Topics discussed will provide the foundation and lexicon for understanding and interpreting financial statements, demonstrate how to use various financial planning tools in declining and rebounding market conditions, describe different sources of financing and how to use them effectively depending on market conditions, and provide step-wise strategies to avoid bankruptcy.

MIRARCO and Goodman School of Mines are pleased to offer a short course on:

The Fundamentals of Environmental Risk Assessment to be held April 9-11, 2014 - in Sudbury, Ontario

A world class course based on the Sudbury story
The Sudbury region has a long, rich history in mining and metal processing, with a parallel history of both environmental degradation and environmental rehabilitation and recovery. For almost a decade, it was the subject of one of the world's largest environmental risk assessments.

This three-day intensive course will teach participants the fundamentals of environmental risk assessment, using world-class expertise and examples borrowed from the Sudbury story and from elsewhere around the world. It will provide participants with a detailed introduction to the principles of both human health and ecological risk assessments. The course will cover the scientific background as well as the regulatory environment behind risk assessments, and will teach participants how to evaluate, communicate and manage these risks. Examples will focus on the mining industry in Ontario, but the course will be useful for small to large projects across resource-based industries and regulatory boundaries.

Risk-Based Quality Control Workshop

Workshop Description :
Understanding the regulations is the first part of implementing an assay quality control program but understanding processes and risks helps define effective quality control programs.  The course will focus on sample preparation and assay methods to enable participants to better understand the various quality control methods.  All of the QC tools (blanks, reference materials/standards, duplicates and check assays) will be reviewed including rates of insertion, graphical data presentation and decision making.  Case histories and classroom exercises are used to augment the learning experience.

Exploration Targeting - Mini-Module 1

Description Mini-Module 1: Data Collection, Compilation, Visualization, Integration and Interpretation Techniques

Data compilation and integration techniques for exploration targeting are not taught in a university or college setting and typically are learned on-the-job through trial and error, often producing a mishmash of formats that cannot be integrated into a unified database nor queried in a multi-parameter sense. The ability to use all of the available data, cost effectively and efficiently, will increase the probability of success and limit costly testing of false anomalies. This short course, consisting of two modules, will be delivered in logical steps. Module/Day 1 will address best practices for the Collection, Organization, and Storage of geological, geophysical, geochemical and remote sensing data into standardized and queriable formats and conclude with data processing techniques for geochemical and geophysical data; Module 2/Day 2 will focus on Data Integration, Visualization, Interpretation and Targeting. Data integration and Interpretation are iterative processes that clearly require multiple Visualization steps. Through worked examples, we will clearly show the benefits of both manual (on paper) and digital (using software) data interpretations with a discussion on the pros and cons of each. Case studies will be used to illustrate effective targeting strategies using geological, geochemical, geophysical and remote sensing data. This course is designed to meet the needs of industry professionals at all points in their careers, although probably most relevant for young professionals, and companies that have acquired archived databases through purchase or M&A or are tired of searching through endless hard drives for the "right data" files before planning meaningful exploration programs.
