Peter Gray, P.Geo. honoured with June Callwood Awards

WATERLOO REGION - Peter Gray, Co-Chair Waterloo Wellington Children’s Groundwater Festival was honoured with the prestigious June Callwood Outstanding Achievement Award at a ceremony on April 14, 2015 in Toronto.

Leonardo da Vinci said that “Water is the driving force of all nature.” Peter Gray knows this to be true. Trained as a hydrogeologist, Peter is also a dedicated father who saw a growing need to educate young people about the importance of water and our environment. In 1994, in partnership with the Ontario Groundwater Association, Peter organized the first Children’s Groundwater Festival. Students were given the opportunity to get out of the classroom and experience hands-on learning in the natural environment. After the success of the first festival, Peter wanted to share its important message and unique learning experience with more kids. In 2001 Peter was instrumental in the formation of the Children’s Water Education Council. Today Peter leads the Council, offering support and resources to communities across the province that want to hold their own Children’s Groundwater Festivals. To date these festivals have educated more than half a million students in Ontario about the importance of groundwater protection and conservation.

The award recognizes dedicated individuals and non-profit organizations that, like the late June Callwood, have made a lasting and meaningful contribution to their communities or have provided significant support to volunteer activities.
